Ruhija Sector Lodges

Ruhija is Bwindi's hidden gem — the highest, coolest, and least-visited of the park's four gorilla trekking sectors. Sitting at over 2,300 metres above sea level in the eastern part of the forest, Ruhija offers a distinctly different atmosphere: mist-shrouded bamboo groves, a quieter trekking experience, and some of the finest birdwatching in all of Africa. If you want mountain gorillas without the crowds — and perhaps a glimpse of the rare African Green Broadbill — Ruhija is the sector to choose.

About Ruhija Sector

Ruhija occupies the highest part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and sits along the edge of the Albertine Rift — the western branch of the Great Rift Valley that separates Uganda from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This geological boundary is one of the world's great biodiversity hotspots, and Ruhija's position at the rift escarpment is a key reason why the sector supports such a concentration of rare Albertine Rift endemic species. The Virunga volcano chain, shared between Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC, is home to the other mountain gorilla population, the Virunga Massif, and on clear days Ruhija offers distant views toward this same volcanic landscape.

The landscape is a mosaic of montane forest, bamboo zones, and open ridges that offer long views across the park canopy. Temperatures are noticeably cooler than in lower sectors — expect daytime highs of 15 to 20 degrees Celsius and chilly evenings that may dip to 5 to 10 degrees.

The sector has two habituated gorilla families — Bitukura and Oruzogo — both named after features of their forest territory. Treks from Ruhija follow trails through dense bamboo and montane forest, and while the altitude adds a physical element, the terrain is not as steep as Nkuringo. Treks typically take three to six hours.

Ruhija's real distinction lies in its birdlife. The sector sits in a transitional altitudinal zone that supports an exceptional concentration of Albertine Rift endemic species. Birders travel here specifically for the African Green Broadbill — a small, jewel-like bird found only in a few locations in the Albertine Rift. Other targets include Shelley's Crimsonwing, Ruwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin, and Short-tailed Warbler.
