This geological boundary is one of the world's great biodiversity hotspots, and Ruhija's position at the rift escarpment is a key reason why the sector supports such a concentration of rare Albertine Rift endemic species. The Virunga volcano chain, shared between Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC, is home to the other mountain gorilla population, the Virunga Massif, and on clear days Ruhija offers distant views toward this same volcanic landscape.
